Les tables rondes relatives à l'histoire de l'environnement urbain ont été initiées en 2000 à Clermont-Ferrand et ont été depuis tenues à Leicester (2002) puis Sienne (2004). Pour leur quatrième édition, elles prendront place à Paris du 16 au 18 novembre 2006, à l'initiative du Centre d'Histoire des Techniques et de l'Environnement (CDHTE, Conservatoire National des Arts et Métiers) et du Laboratoire Théorie des Mutations Urbaines (Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique et Université de Paris 8, UMR 7136).
Round table meetings on the urban environmental history were initiated in 2000 in Clermont-Ferrand and have since been held in Leicester (2002) and Siena (2004). The fourth edition of the event is due to take place in Paris from 16 to 18 November 2006, on the initiative of the Centre d'Histoire des Techniques et de l'Environnement (CDHTE) of the Conservatoire National des Arts et Métiers and the Laboratoire Théorie des Mutations Urbaines (LTMU-UMR 7136), a mixed CNRS and Paris VIII University research unit.
Certains parmi vous ont assisté à une voire à plusieurs si ce n'est à toutes les tables rondes. Celle de Paris s'inscrit dans la continuité des précédentes et vise à favoriser la fédération d'une communauté scientifique européenne dédiée à l'histoire de l'environnement urbain. L'appel à communication s'adresse par conséquent à tous les chercheurs concernés par cette thématique.
Some of you will have participated in one or more, or even all the round table meetings. The Paris event will continue in the wake of the previous events and aims to promote the federation of a European scientific community dedicated to the history of the urban environment. The present call for papers is therefore directed to all researchers involved with this issue.

This conference wishes to be a laboratory for European and therefore international cooperation between researchers and research teams from various disciplines in the field of historical science.
Comme lors de nos précédentes réunions, le choix a été fait de retenir une thématique générale autour de laquelle seront articulées les différentes sessions. Cette année nous avons choisi d'interroger, sur les traces laissées par Fernand Braudel, la matérialité urbaine. Il s'agira ainsi d'explorer cette matérialité urbaine - matières en circulation et en transformation, environnement construit, infrastructures - ainsi que les pratiques - savantes ou profanes - qui y sont associées.
As with previous meetings, a general theme was decided upon, around which the various sessions might be developed. This year, we have chosen, in the footsteps of Fernand Braudel, to address the question of urban materiality - material that is circulating and undergoing transformation, the built-up environment, infrastructures - and associated practices, whether erudite or profane.

a- Saisir la pratique urbaine, le parcours et la trace de ce qui entre et sort de la ville ouverte et/ou fermée, petite ou grande, mais aussi ce qui y reste, se dégrade, se consomme, se putréfie, s'évapore - le chapeau de poil de vigogne, traité au mercure importé, fabriqué, vendu et utilisé à Paris, est réparé, vendu en Espagne, réparé à nouveau et exporté en Amérique latine, lieu d'origine... Observer les êtres et leur domesticité, leur biodiversité, leur biocénose, les matières, les échanges environnementaux dans toutes les dimensions - hydrosphérique, pédosphérique, atmosphérique. Ainsi les nuées d'hirondelles au-dessus des champs d'épandage où pondent les moustiques et les mouches. Il s'agit de faire ressortir des fouilles archéologiques et archivistiques, les hétérogénéités - la production artisanale - comme les homogénéités - la production en série industrielle. Il s'agit encore de suivre le cheminement des produits - ce que les environnementalistes désignent par traçabilité et ce que l'historien pourrait nommer témoignage - à toutes les échelles spatiales et temporelles dans l'agglomération occidentale depuis le XVIIIe siècle, alors que survient l'industrie, cette grande machine à broyer la matière et le temps.
a- Grasping urban practices, the path and the trace of what goes in and comes out of the open and/or closed city, whether large or small, but also what remains, what is degraded, consumed, putrefied or evaporated. Thus the hat of imported mercury-treated vicuna wool, manufactured, sold and used in Paris, is repaired and sold in Spain, then repaired again and exported to Latin America, from where it originatedŠ Observing living beings and their domesticity, their biodiversity, their biocenosis, materials, all aspects of environmental exchanges - hydrospheric, pedospheric and atmospheric. Hence the observation of clouds of swallows above the sewage farms where mosquitoes and flies lay their eggs. The idea is to bring to light archeological digs and archive searches, heterogeneities of handcrafted production as well as the homogeneities of serial industrial production. This also involves following the path of products, which environmentalists discuss as traceability and historians might name testimony, on all spatial and temporal scales in Western urban environments since the 18th century, with the advent of industry, this phenomenal grinder of material and time.
b- Suivre les citadins qui font le métabolisme urbain, qui transportent, transforment, transfèrent, déposent, entreposent, enfouissent, consomment, échangent, analysent ces matières, discutent de ce qui les fait vivre et mourir. Comment, au moment où ils sont interrogés, les individus perçoivent-ils ces objets, ces matériaux, ces senteurs, ces traces de l'activité quotidienne ? Comment cette attitude et cette aptitude évoluent-elles et modifient-elles les perceptions de l'environnement urbain ? Ainsi la « rapidité », notion nerveuse, maladive, péjorative au XVIIIe siècle, se transforme au cours du second XIXe siècle pour devenir une notion d'efficacité, d'intelligence, positive au XXe siècle. Ainsi l'omniprésence, dans les discours savants comme dans les écrits techniques, de la notion de cycle des matières au XIXe siècle, qui n'est pas sans écho aujourd'hui.
b- We propose to follow city dwellers, who create urban metabolism, who transport, transform, transfer, deposit, stock, bury, consume, exchange, analyse these materials, and discuss what makes them live and die. When questioned, how do individuals perceive these objects, these materials, these odours, the traces of daily activity? How does this attitude and aptitude evolve and modify perception of the urban environment? Thus "speed", perceived as nervous, sick and pejorative in the 18th century was transformed in the course of the 19th century into a positive notion associated with efficiency and intelligence in the 20th century. Furthermore, the omnipresence of the concept of "material cycle" in both scientific discourse and technical writings in the 19th century is not without echo today.

Selon le mode adopté depuis 2000, le nombre de participants et le nombre de communications seront volontairement réduits - environ trente exposés oraux sont attendus. Dans une perspective européenne, le comité scientifique encourage les auteurs à proposer des communications à visée comparative ou des communications couplées (présentées conjointement par deux auteurs sur une thématique identique mais sur des études de cas différentes). Le comité scientifique attachera en outre une attention particulière à l'inscription des propositions dans les thématiques et problématiques retenues pour la table ronde, comme à leur qualité et à leur originalité.
According to the policy adopted since 2000, the number of participants and communications will be limited by design - no more than thirty oral presentations are expected. In a European perspective, the scientific committee encourages authors to propose comparative papers or paired papers (jointly presented by two authors working on an identical subject but using different case studies). The scientific committee will give special attention to proposals pertaining to the themes and issues chosen by the round table organisers in addition to meeting quality and originality criteria.
